Is your enhancement related to a problem? Please describe.
Distributor currently does not provide a built-in way to localize or translate content for remote destinations. Teams managing multilingual networks or regional publishing workflows must manually translate distributed content after syndication, creating duplicate effort, slowing editorial workflows, and increasing the risk of inconsistent messaging across sites.
With WordPress 7.0 introducing Connectors and broader AI provider integrations, Distributor has an opportunity to streamline multilingual publishing directly within the distribution workflow.
Designs
Let's look at adding an optional AI-powered translation workflow to Distributor that integrates with WordPress 7.0 Connectors and any configured AI providers capable of translation tasks.
When distributing content to a remote site, Distributor could automatically translate post content into the appropriate target language before syndication. The plugin would need a mechanism for determining the desired language for each remote destination. Potential approaches could include:
- Using the remote site locale as the default target language
- Allowing explicit language mappings in Distributor settings per remote connection
- Supporting per-distribution overrides during the distribution workflow
- Providing filters/hooks for custom enterprise translation logic
Initial support could focus on translating core post fields such as title, excerpt, and content, with future expansion into taxonomies, metadata, image alt text, and other structured content.
This enhancement would help Distributor better support multilingual publishing workflows while also serving as an early real-world integration point between Distributor and the emerging AI infrastructure in WordPress core.
A final decision here would be whether the remote posts are kept in-sync with the origin or if this translated approach immediately severs the connected status.
